Bead Rosette

Cold again. Snow again. I decided to stay indoors and ignore the dog's pleas for a walk. I took him for a quick walk yesterday and I was sweating by the time I got back after walking through the field near us. I think he was tired of leaping high through the drifts too.

Back at home I did a not-so-quick little craft with a three-year old. I was looking through a book I have called "Native Crafts" in a series of fun kids' craft books "Kids Can Do It" put out by Kids Can Press.* Lots of fun, manageable ideas in these books, and I've been using them for many years. I was tempted to make the moccasins, but thought it might be a bit taxing for my visitor.

This is the rosette we made with pony beads, a bit of yarn and two circles of felt for the backing. It's supposed to be a necklace, but it became a bit heavy for that. It makes for a nice decoration for her bedroom door though.

We started in the centre of the felt and strung the beads on, working in circles towards the outer edge. The back piece of felt is from a felted sweater and it hides all the stitches from the beadwork. It was fun to do, and I can think of all sorts of possibilities to expand on this simple idea.

Just a short one today folks. I have to drive my daughter around to drop of resumes for summer employment today ... I think I'll take a book or some knitting along with me.  ho hum

Thanks for stopping by!

Wendy

I'd rather be bird watching ;)

* this is not a solicitation, just my own opinions on a great set of books

  1. The bead rosette is so very pretty! Would be great on a crocheted chain necklace. Or with a pin on the back for a brooch. That last photo is so very cute. Best wishes, Tammy

  2. I like the cute bead rosette, a fun thing to do with your young visitor.. I wish the chickadee around here could be hand fed, they spook easily.. Even if I do keep them well fed.. Have a great day!

    1. All chickadees will come to your hand. You just have to be patient. Maybe take away the other feeders while you stand out there (yes! outside in the cold), with your hand out filled with seeds. You can keep your gloves on. Don't make eye contact at first, and then the bravest birds will come to you first. There are always a few shy ones, but I hold my hand out higher for them. And stand close to the trees where they have some safety. Before you know it you won't be able to walk out the door without first filling your pockets with birdseed (black sunflower seeds are their favourite).

  3. Nice work, thanks for the Chickadee tips! I've tried before, but didn't have enough patience. The birds seemed to know they could just wait until I went inside and then get their food.

  5. Oh wow....the photo of the birds resting on the hand is amazing....you do have the gift! As for the rosette, what a clever and colourful idea. I might have to 'steal' this idea from you, Wendy!

  6. Your little birds look very like our Marsh tits. Lovely little things. It seems so weird you having snow when we have rain here (I know we're on different continents, it just brings is home how different the weather can be with other folks). Good luck with the driving! :o)

  7. A very sweet little craft! I have a few kid's nature craft books from when my children were young and saved them for when I am a Gramma. That is this May - so excited - a little boy! The little birds are just precious. Nice of you to help your daughter out with driving around. xo Karen

  11. A sweet craft that a 3 year old could participate in and I like the idea of it hanging on her bedroom door for everyone to see.
It's pretty cool here this morning and the furnace is running but supposed to warm back up to the 80s by Sunday. The coldest Feb. we've experienced in Florida.
