52 Weeks of Happy / Week 3

Well, I'm already, at week 3, starting to scramble for this post.  It's not so much that I'm not finding things to be happy about, it's more that I don't always have my camera handy to capture the moment.  My camera is not a pocket camera, and I don't have a camera on my phone (because I don't have a cell phone).  So this is what I came up with:

1.  A little cottontail rabbit who has been visiting my backyard throughout the winter.  I'll see how happy I am about this when I start to notice budding flowers nipped off.  For now he's only been eating the birdseed and the grass, but I'm watching you little rascally rabbit!

2.  A pair of wood thrushes that come through here every spring.  They don't stay, as they prefer the woods to my town yard, but I do enjoy seeing them if only briefly.

(I must apologize for the bird photos in today's post ... I snapped them all on the same early morning last week and the lighting was not very good, so they all turned out slightly blurry)

3.  This robin who is building a nest in our white pine.  Such a sloppy nest with long strands of dried grass hanging down, but it's nice to know they are back again.  They built this nest last year in the same spot.

4.  And lastly, this little master of disguise ...

Can you see the little brown creeper?  He's a bit blurry in all the photos too.  Compounded with the fact that the light was poor, he would not sit still for more than a second.

I'm amazed at how well this tiny bird blends into the tree bark.  He's similar to a nuthatch in the way he walks up and down the tree trunks finding lots of little bugs.  I only noticed him when I saw a slight movement on the tree trunk and I knew exactly what it was.

And although the weather has been up and down to such extremes last week, I'm happy to say that I was able to sit outside on the patio for a brief moment yesterday (until a swarm of bugs drove me inside!).  My chair has frost on it this morning.  We had to drive through SNOW on Saturday to take my daughter back to university (it had even settled on the ground!!), today will hopefully be better and we're already sitting at 3'C ... practically a heat wave ;)

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. You've done we'll there to capture them, I never seem to be able to get them, they've flown away before I get chance to press the button! I have a phone with a camera, just can't use it! :) x

    1. I go out the backdoor very quietly when I see the right birds. Once I had a hawk fly right towards me, I had the camera with the zoom on ... everything was perfect and I snapped about 10 shots in 1 second. Looked at the camera to review them ... "no card" showed on the screen. Best shots I ever (didn't) take too ;)

  2. Aww, I think the bunny is so cute! Hopefully it will just stick with eating the grass and birdseed.

    1. I think I may have been responsible for luring him into my yard with the birdseed. There's a pair and they often nest under our shed.

  4. Lovely pics Wendy, of Mother Nature at her best! Your robin is a lovely chap, sort of tall and upright ... Is it just the angle of the photo or are Canadian robins different to British ones? Ours are smaller and sort of rounder. Hope the weather gets a bit warmer for you soon, we've had one or two nice days, but today's cold and grey again. Can't believe it's May next week!

    Have a wonderful week

    Love Claire xx

    1. Our robins are bigger than yours ... "American Robin" is the proper name. Apparently named by the first pilgrims who were reminded of their British robins when they first arrived in America. But they show no resemblance at all to your cute little robins. These big boys are bigger than a starling. Hope weather turns warmer for you too! Wendy x

  5. ~ Wendy! hello....YOU have done amazingly well with these happy pics!
LOVE Mr Peter Cotton Tail, and I do hope he behaves himself on your patch...I know you have a bunny already, so maybe 'word' just got around...Those robins are a lot different to ours......In fact I wouldn't have guessed he was a Robin red breast apart form the obvious! Hope your week warms up a little as 3 degrees sounds a little Baltic! ~ Today has been chilly here also...But cheery blossoms are blooming and that's what tells me it is almost May! ~ Wishing you a week as lovely as you are....Love Maria

    1. The cottontails are taking advantage of my soft heart for bunnies. This little guy was only about 10 feet away from me and does he look the least bit worried?! Cody keeps them in check for me, but it confuses him to be told to chase the outdoor bunnies, but not the indoor bunnies. Our robins are very different from yours, and although they're sort of aloof and 'all business' with getting worms and caring for their young, they do have a very pretty song early in the morning. We have some buds coming out now too, so hopefully the plants are a sure sign of warmer days. You have a great week over there too Maria! Thanks for popping in ;)

  6. Gorgeous pictures and your robins are so much bigger than our little British ones. I know what you mean about having time to take pictures though, I also have a fairly large camera that I love but is to big to keep in my handbag and I just don't like taking pictures on my phone. Stay happy ... Sarah x

    1. I'm glad you like my somewhat fuzzy photos Sarah ;) Yeah, it's no fun walking around the neighbourhood with a big fat camera bouncing off my tummy with every step! I'm sure my neighbours already think I'm a bit off taking photos in my backyard ... what would they think if I stopped and took pictures of silhouettes of bare trees at the park! "Nutters!" Have a great week Sarah :)

  8. We have abunny that helps clean up the birseed mess as well! He's been hanging around most of the winter - I love how he freezes when I go outside - like if he doesn't move, I won't see him...

    1. Well, he'd probably blend better with leaves and twigs in a forest, he's fairly visible on that green grass. The other night we came home and he was sitting in the middle of the driveway and wouldn't move ... my daughter had to get out and shoo him away ... dumb bunny.

  11. Gorgeous photos Wendy! Your Robins are huge compared to our little dainty ones. Love your last sequence of pictures - you did well to spot as well as photograph the little feathered friend. Mel x

  12. Your photos are gorgeous! Love all the bird photos. I love Red Robins. I even hand fed one as a teenager until he was big enough and then gave him a home at a bird sanctuary. His left foot was deformed and I think the mamma kicked him out of the nest :/ But all went well and the story had a happy ending :)

    Have a happy week :)
