Five on Friday

I really admire people who can truly repurpose something ordinary and make it into something extraordinary. That's not me. I do have a few things, however, that I have repurposed. I haven't done it through refinishing and painting, just used an item for a purpose for which it was not originally intended. As luck would have it, I have five to share with you!

One
My mom had a dainty blue cream and sugar set on a small matching tray. When I pulled it out of her china cabinet, I found the creamer had a broken handle. I found so many of Mom's things were damaged when I cleaned out their house. She kept everything whether it was in good shape or not. I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't keep anything that was broken, cracked, chipped or in any way damaged. I got rid of the creamer and just kept the sugar bowl. I quickly found a use for this on my dresser, and I hang my earrings around the rim of the sugar bowl.

Instead of the creamer, I have placed a tiny ceramic jug that belonged to my grandmother on that side of the tray.

Two
This next piece is a chamber pot that I discovered in my great aunt's home (which used to be my great grandparents' home). It was in good shape, and I liked the pattern on the side. I use this in my bathroom to hold spare hand towels.

Three
This past week I burned the last of a Christmas candle until the wicks just went out on their own.

Rather than put the jar in recycling (which I normally do), I poured hot water into the jar, let it sit for a minute, poured the water out and then wiped a paper towel around the inside of the jar to remove all the wax residue. Then I filled the jar with cotton swabs and it sits in my bathroom. Much nicer than the box the swabs came in, and I can have it handy right on the counter instead of hidden in a drawer.

Four
I picked up this glass jar at the thrift store a few years ago. As soon as I put the next load of dishes into the dishwasher, I knew what I would put in this jar.

At first my family thought the jar was filled with candies, and they all got excited!

Sorry guys, it's dishwasher soap cubes ;)  I like that I can leave the soap right on the counter disguised in this jar, making it handy to pop the cubes into the dishwasher without having to open up the cupboard every time.

Five
On top of my fridge I have the two rolling pins that get the most use in this house. The wooden pin is mine, and the very heavy metal pin is my husband's. He makes pizza on Saturday night, and bought this hefty metal rolling pin to help him roll out the dough. But they can't just sit on top of the fridge or they would either roll off onto our head when we opened the fridge door, or they would roll to the back of the fridge under the cupboard and we wouldn't be able to reach them.

Instead I have the pins resting on this very old picture holder. I've used this for a few years as a picture holder, but then for whatever reason it was up on the fridge empty, and I sat a rolling pin in it and it fit perfectly. Then I just stacked them up and they both stayed in place.

Linking up with Amy and her Five on Friday today.

Thanks for stopping by!

Wendy

  2. These are some great tips for using old things in different ways. I also inherited a lot of china and dishes and ended up tossing out the broken ones (crazed or chipped). Some of the old plates I have used in the garden as edging along the flower beds. I have reused the glass candle jars for sea glass and sea shells I've collected. They make a pretty display. I've never tried the dish washer cubes. Pam

  10. These are brilliant ideas, Wendy! I wished that I had read how to remove leftover wax and repurpose candle jars before I recycled mine. It'll probably take me another couple of years to use up my next candle jar. Ha!

  15. You've come up with some good repurposing ideas Wendy and I imagine there are a number of chamber pots planted up with flowers which is what I would likely have done. The towels looks nice in yours and a big jar for the dishwasher cubes sounds good to me - mine are way under the cupboard behind the wastebasket.

  21. Smart, practical and pretty ways to repurpose beloved family pieces and purchased objects, too, giving them an opportunity to shine again.

Hope you have a wonderful week ahead. Spring has finally sprung, it seems, here, in southern Ontario and it has given me a much needed burst of energy! Enjoy it!

    Hugs,

  24. Such ingenious repurposing ideas, Wendy! You have lovely old items and they look beautiful in your kitchen and bathroom. I may need to copy some of these ideas... :)
Thank you for your lovely comment on my Five on Friday post! The cloud photo was taken from our terrace. It was lovely to see the blue sky after the darkish, greyish winter and I found especially beautiful the contrast between the light and dark parts of the clouds. The photo doesn't do justice to the beauty of nature.
Wishing you a sunny and happy week!

  25. Wendy, These are all great ideas for repurposing. The creamer idea is practical and pretty, the chamber pot for towels is genius, the lovely glass jar with pretties is convenient. I love to have pretty things that serve a purpose. Sylvia D.

  26. You are just TOO smart! I love it when people repurpose without destroying the item they are re-purposing. If something is already broken, that's one thing, but when things are broken apart, sawed on, painted, wallpapered and glued, I am horrified! I loved each and every new use for your lovely items. Oh how I adore those blue & white things!!!! :-)

  27. Kudos! You are one clever lady. I must start seeing things in a new way. So sorry the little creamer was broken. What a lovely set for your tea table. We must all be on the lookout in thrift stores to see if we can find it for you.
