Cold Weather Thrifting

Well, not only is it cold outdoors ...

... even my thrifting is turning up wintery finds!

I'm not usually one for decorative plates, but couldn't resist the wintery scenes on these two little gems.

For a long time I've admired the pincushions a lot of ladies have been making from teacups, so I decided to look for something special at the thrift store.  I came up with a couple that are so pretty ...

The clover bunches around this tea cup caught my eye.  Wouldn't Smudge love to munch his way through a bed of clover!  We used to search out clover for our horse, and then drag her over to it and watch her enjoy a little tasty treat ... we would even chew on the sweet flowers ourselves.

dear old Scamp with my sister
This teacup caught my eye with it's cheery yellow daffy-down-dillies!

Not much good for a pincushion if I'm going to cover up the daffodils, but I couldn't leave it on the shelf ...

Then I spied this little sugar bowl, and thought even it would make a cute pincushion, especially since there was no saucer to fuss with ... perfect!

Which got me thinking I could use just plain small bowls for pincushions, and I picked this up as well (although it would make for a giant pincushion!) ...

I like how the light is caught through the glass ...

But when I saw this ...

I knew it would look so cute with little glass-headed pins sticking out through all the tiny heart-shaped holes!  I think I'm going to start with this one, and turn it into my first pincushion.

I can't believe I've never made a pincushion, but I've always used one given to me by my sister which sits beside my sewing machine.  It's only recently that I've been sewing more upstairs (away from my sewing corner) that I need to stick pins in somewhere while I'm sewing ... you know, rather than in the arm of my chair!

I'll show you the transformation as soon as it's complete :)

Thanks for stopping by!

Wendy

  2. Awesome finds! I love the snowy plates. My mama had a whole collection of those when I was little. Such sweet scenes of pioneer people hard at work. I can't wait to see your finished pincushions. :)

    1. Hi Kristen ... there were two more plates there, but I left them (didn't want to pay $20 for all of them!). I liked the scenes on these two plates best. Wendy

  3. You make me laugh! And remind me of myself. I would most certainly be bringing home EVERY ONE of your thrifty finds. The images on the plates are utterly enchanting, and I love that clover-laced tea cup! You were right to not leave those pretty daffs too. And I look forward to seeing your first pincushion. (I've been wanting to make one of those as well.)

That photo of Scamp and your sister is beautiful. Sigh.

    1. I love giving thrifted things a new life ... all cleaned up and sparkling again :) Scamp was a wonderful pet, and the only horse we ever owned (technically my sister's horse, but I rode her as well). Half Quarter Horse & half Appaloosa ... strawberry roan was her colour, and that's her little log barn behind her :)

  4. I agree - that photo of Scamp and your sister is wonderful. It looks like a postcard. I can't wait to see your pincushions too. I rarely sew, but just today I was asking my husband if he can remember whether we have a pincushion or not. (That's how often I sew.) I might just have to make one too. :)

  8. Fab op shop finds Wendy.....love the plates. I'm not really into decorative plates either, but I wouldn't have been able to resist those two.....
Your two cup and saucer sets are delightful. The clover design is quite different but just lovely and who can resist cheery Daffodils.
Good idea to use the dishes for the pincushions. I look forward to seeing how they turn out......
Nice to find some special pieces and give them a new home and purpose....

    1. Hi Claire! In my mind I keep envisioning my future sewing room (when one of my kids moves out permanently ... not that I want them gone, but their bedroom will finally be my sewing room). In that room I'll have space for all these little treasures that I plan to display and admire :) Wendy

  10. Great teacups can always be found at thrift stores!

I have no need for a pincushion at this point, but I'm excited to see how yours turn out! That one will indeed look adorable with pins poking all out the sides. Maybe one day I'll delve into the scary world of sewing and make some pincushions myself. :)

  11. lucky finds at the thrift store.....that daffodil cup is lovely! I make pincushions from time to time and am also tempted to make one in a teacup....have you seen the little teacup/saucers turned into little birdseed holders? They somehow drill and put them on stakes and stick them in the garden, too cute!

    1. That bird feeder does sound cute, I'd be afraid of cracking the whole cup to bits though. Mimi Kirchner has some amazing teacup pincushions on her site "Doll" the link is here: http://mimikirchner.com/blog/archives/2012/12/woodsy-tiny-worlds/
