Night Table

As I mentioned in my last post, I had gone into the thrift store last week with an actual purpose.  I've been on the lookout for quite a while now for a little night table for my daughter's bedroom.  Since she moved to university town, she took most of her bedroom furniture with her.  That's all good and fine, but when she does come home for an occasional weekend or holiday, I needed to outfit her bedroom a bit so she's not living out of a suitcase.

I still had her original dresser, so I brought it back into her room.  We bought her a bed to take to her other room, and she left her old bed here at home.  It used to be mine and has quite the 60s look.

The set of plastic drawers to the right was what she was using for a night table before.

I've come across about three or four candidates for a night table at the thrift store.  But every time I find one, I can't make up my mind quick enough, and by the time I go back, they're always gone.  Last week I finally found one that is in excellent shape, the right size, a complimentary style to the existing bedroom furniture, and at only $12, a bargain to boot!  I like the deep shelf and the drawer is a good size too.

I know this furniture style is very dated, and I'm sure a lot of you would be tempted to update it with a coat of paint, but I like it the way it is.  It's clean, in good shape and it's solid wood.  I painted a few furniture pieces last year, and it was fun to change it up, but my house is full of natural wood furniture, and I find the painted pieces look out of place if I try to incorporate the two.  I find wooden furniture to be very comforting, and I much prefer the feel of it over painted surfaces.

I think my daughter will be happy to have a place to put her book and a drink at nighttime now.  The little chalkware dog was given to her by Santa one year.  Santa left a note to say that this little dog had sat amongst his bookshelves for years, but since my daughter was so anxious for a dog, he was sending him to her.  His name is "Booky".

The walls were painted a while ago too, when my daughter was home at Christmas.  Although these photos are far from the actual colour, it's a very calming aqua/robin's egg blue sort of colour.  I'm really happy to get this room back together again.  I know it won't be long before my daughter is out of the house completely, so I really wanted to make it feel like an inviting room again, and not just a temporary unfinished stopover spot.

Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Her room is lovely. I think it's wonderful that you go to so much effort to maintain a cozy, comfortable space for her while she is in school. I am sure she appreciates it. I would have done the same with the table, leaving it as is. I think it's a beautiful piece of furniture and it's also functional, so it's really perfect for your needs.

  5. I still have my kids rooms comfy and cozy and they remain their rooms, not impersonal guest spaces. A cozy space for your daughter to come home to and feel the warmth and love. I heart the spotted bed cover. I also love great bargains.

  9. It's very hard when our children leave to go to University and take their 'essence' with them ... when Harry comes home I try to make his bedroom feel welcoming too ... extremely difficult as he doesn't want me to change anything!

I think your daughter will be very pleased with her room as it looks so welcoming and the night table fits in perfectly.

Have a lovely week and hope the sun shines on you!

    Love Claire xx

  11. It looks great & of course it will be useful for your daughter when she return in the holidays. My son moved into furnished accommodation when he went of to uni last year so all of his furniture remains in place here His little brother camps out in his room until he returns even though it causes ructions xx

  14. AHHH you are such a good mama friend!!! What a score!!! I love it as is as well and am still tempted to scout out a natural wood table (rather than the one I painted) for the girls room because I too love wood! It is so rich and warm! And I think that it's great to have a space that is put together to make her feel cozy at home! Happy Wednesday to you lady!!! Nicole xoxo

  15. I love that nightstand! I wouldn't paint it, either. It goes so perfectly with the other furniture. And just 12 dollars! What a find! When I need a new piece of furniture I've been looking at thrift stores because solid wood is nearly impossible to find nowadays. Most of it is veneer over some mystery wood...but the prices they ask are outrageous.

I was a wreck when my first daughter went off to college. It was a little easier with the second one, but not by much. They're in their late thirties now and I still have some of their things in their rooms...the rooms just double as guest rooms now.

    Blessings,

    Victoria

  17. We live in a small cottage with just 2 bedrooms. My daughter made me promise that I would always have a room for her to come home to. After college she moved to San Francisco, but I kept my promise and she had a room. Nine years later she is back in town and lives on our lane. I finally was able to turn her bedroom into a creative space because she just heads home to sleep after an evening visiting with us.

Your table loos perfect with the bed and dresser.

  18. I'm with you on the wood ... even really tatty wooden pieces can be tarted up with sand paper and wood oil, why hide their natural glory under paint?

  23. I agree, I don't mind the odd bit of furniture painted but this looks great in its natural state and god perfectly with the bed. You are such a great Mum doing all of this for her, I can't imagine my parents ever even thinking of doing the same when I was at University....Mel x

  24. I am in love with Booky! But of course that's by the by - the little night table goes so nicely with the rest of the room and furniture Wendy, you did well to find it. I'm sure your lovely daughter will be very happy and feel settled in her 'old' room, filled with love! Love, Joy xo
