The Eagles are Coming!

Haven't had too much to blog about this winter ... has it been obvious? On the weekend I got a sudden severe sore throat, which turned into a dry cough. My planned visit to my dad had to be cancelled which was really frustrating. I wallowed around the house on Saturday morning, and then my husband asked me to come and see an open house to get my mind off of things. We drove up to Lake Scugog (Skoogog) just north of us to see a little log cabin cottage that had been turned into a house years ago. Not that we're planning on moving, but one day we would like to move to a place with a couple of acres. Hey, it's a dream.

On the way up I noticed a huge bird soaring over the road and twisted and turned to get a good look. It was a bald eagle!!  We don't normally have bald eagles here, and they were pretty much wiped out in this area with DDT back in the day. I have seen one in the springtime a few years ago soaring alongside Dundas Peak (Niagara Escarpment), but never one in my area (keep a watchful eye over there Margie!). I could clearly see his white head and white tail. A real treat for me! I urged my husband to stop the truck! and I whipped out my camera sigh...phone :( and took a few shots. These were just for evidence you understand, I knew it would be a miracle of the photos even turned out. Can you see him? Right there flying above the wires. No? You might think it's a speck of dirt on your computer screen (actually the specks of dirt on my computer screen are larger than the eagle image!)

a helping arrow to pinpoint the eagle ;)

Okay, so maybe it's more just a shot of a typical country road in Ontario for those of narrower views. But if you broaden your mind, you might just see the eagle in this next cropped (very cropped) image:

Gosh I miss my camera :[

Thanks for stopping by to share in this small bright spot of my recent days.

  1. How exciting, we see them from time to time down here and it's always a thrill.

  2. Spotting an eagle is very exciting especially when you don't have many in your area! We have a lot of them in our area and see them often but I rarely get photos. I love to watch them soar looking for a meal over the fields or rivers. I hope your throat is better. Take care. Pam

  3. I'm not sure if they're this far north Wendy but am excited by your sighting. I saw one in Florida flying overhead and being chased and poked by what could have been seagulls, not sure. At least it was close enough I could see the white head.
There have been snowy owls in our area but I've not seen one.

  4. I can see the speck when I scrolled down a bit. The second photo is good it shows the eagle. Hope that all goes well with choosing a house!

  5. Ha-ha! You made me giggle. Phones sure don't help when you want to zoom in on something. I hope the eagle spotting is a good sign since things in nature and the world in general are so topsy turvy at the moment. Drink lots of tea with honey.

  8. We usually have a few around here. We have a lot of red-tailed hawks too, but it's always a treat to see the bald eagles.

  9. I know they're around, but I've never seen one. Golden eagle, once, but not a bald eagle.

Regarding your comment at my blog, the Canal being open largely depends on the weather. In a good year they might be open from early January into March for skating.

  10. While looking for the eagle in your photos, I found a LOT of specks on my computer. They didn't move when I scrolled, so I figured they were NOT the eagle. How great to see one - they are plentiful in our area, but always a majestic and welcome sight.

  11. Very cool sighting, Wendy! I'll keep an eye out for you, Wendy.

I hope that your sore throat and dry cough has eased up. A nasty bug continues to make its rounds at work. Every day, someone is sick!

Something else to look forward to: the return of Designated Survivor tomorrow night. Yay!

  13. How exciting to see one in the wild, not something likely to happen where I live! But I did treasure my experience of holding one recently.... Boy are they big!

  14. Hello, I am always thrilled to see an Eagle. They seem to be doing well in Florida and back home in Maryland. I hope you are feeling better. Enjoy and have a happy day!

  15. Loved reading this. Well I must share this story with you as you will get a chuckle out of it. I was walking around the perimeter of my home recently on morning trying to get a tad of Vitamin D and exercise. Well I am just gracefully walking along and all of a sudden I hear something that sounded like a fan had been turned on behind me and the next thing I knew this huge bass drops from the sky about 5 feet in front of me. Now hang with me because I know it doesn't rain BASS. LOL! Then I saw this huge bird fly to a tree nearby. First of all I have a pond in my back yard so I know where the bass came from. It scared me so bad that I ran in the house. Looked out my back window and there the big bird was sitting with his huge feet on top of that fish. So I snapped a picture with my cell from the kitchen window so I could send it to my husband. GUESS WHAT? It was a Bald Eagle! It was the craziest thing ever and also funny afterwards. That bird was beautiful! My husband said I could have been on the Homes funniest videos and National Geographic! LOL! Hope you have a good day dear lady. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  17. My dear Wendy, I truly hope you are feeling better now...I'm so sorry you had to cancel your weekend plans :(

Loved seeing the eagle! We have quite a few bald eagles and golden eagles along the river here and I never tire of seeing them. They are so beautiful and majestic.

    Thinking of you! Hugs!

  18. I hope you're feeling better, Wendy. :( Eagles are making a big comeback here in my neck of New York. I saw two flying above my house last week. They were pretty high up but came down a little lower just as my son brought my camera out of the house. They give me goosebumps whenever I see them!! Have a good rest of your week. xo

  19. Great sighting. I just read an article that said the eagles were feeding down in the county this year, which would be a great thing.

  20. I have a very broad mind. I can see the eagle, his wife, the little ones and why do I see cake as well?

  21. You were so right about the spots on my computer screen...how did you know?!
I'm catching up on blog-reading, so I'm a little late with comments, but can I make one suggestion? If you and your husband are thinking you want to have a couple of acres "someday" - do it. Do it now. Get a headstart on all the projects and fun!

  22. I had a good laugh when I saw your arrow lol!! We have some here and my son saw one but I haven't yet. Still hoping... That's too bad that you got sick and couldn't visit your dad. Hopefully it's all behind you now.
