Five On Friday

I'm joining up with the lovely Amy of Love Made My Home today for her Five on Friday link party. Amy is dealing with lots of difficulties these days, and it's so nice of her to continue hosting the link party. Thank you Amy :)

One

My brother suffered the loss of his sweet little daschund the day after Christmas. My family owned a red daschund when we were growing up, and "Skipper" lived to be 16 years old. "Reba" was a lovely dog, and she was the first dog my brother had owned. She was also in her 16th year, but suffered some sort of tumor in her abdomen and quickly left this life. I made up this felt ornament for him. On the back is a phrase he would ask his kids when they were deciding where to take Reba for a walk ... "Beach, woods or mountains?"

Two

I was happy to see these two scarves revisit me this week! The daycare kids who received them from me (brother & sister) loved them and wore them each day. A very satisfying sight in my entry hall :)

Three

Three balls of scrummy yarn that I will share more about tomorrow!

Four

I have joined the masses. My husband signed us all up with Netflix for Christmas, and also gave me my very own TV. I am in a certain kind of heaven now ;)  I wear a hearing aid and my hearing deteriorates steadily. A hearing aid doesn't fix your hearing loss, it's just a tiny amplifier that increases the volume of everything around you. The increased volume destroys what hearing you have left. One day I hope someone can develop a better system for those with hearing loss. It has now become impossible for me to watch regular television. The closed captions are a joke, and cause more frustration for me (and my family) with trying to read and decipher the terrible translations and still keep up with the images and the plot. I challenge anyone to turn on closed captions and turn down the volume and see if you can keep up. I gave up and turned instead to reading the news on my computer and watching DVDs for entertainment. With Netflix I can watch such a wide variety of both TV shows and movies that it kind of eases the hurt. Netflix you see has proper subtitles attached to their movies and shows. Thank you Netflix.

Five

We bought our dog Cody a new bed for Christmas. He's a little bit lost in it, but he does love the thickness and the softness of it in his old age. He will be 12 in March. He has been in my bad books for a few weeks now as he has suddenly started raiding the bathroom garbage pails. We have had to close all doors when we leave the house ... even if it's just for ten minutes! He sits in the front window to watch us leave, and then he gets to work. I'm trying to be a patient dog owner, but honestly, it feels like a huge betrayal. He has also enjoyed stealing the following from the kitchen counter this Christmas alone: two loaves of bread, one package of bagels, one whole box of Purdy's chocolates (a gift that I hadn't even unwrapped!), a bag of homemade dog treats (a gift for him from a friend!), and about half a bag of rabbit pellets (the hay pellets, not the poop pellets). He has no shame and only a smidgen of guilt.

"Who, me?!"

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. What a lovely ornament to remember Reba,I'm sure it will be treasured. Lovely for you to see that the scarves were appreciated too. I struggle to hear some TV programmes now and have hearing aids but I don't wear them all the time as sometimes I can hear better without if the tinnitus isn't too loud. Have a good weekend:)

  2. What a wonderful ornament, I'm sure your brother will treasure it. That's good about the Netflix and having your own tv. It's so frustrating when we can't hear what's being said. Everyone I know with hearing aids says the same thing about them. Glad your "Littles" liked their scarves, they look so soft and warm.

  3. What a nice gesture to make an ornament for your brother and his family to remember their dog. Oh, Netflix can be dangerous (and fun!) because it is so easy to just watch show after show. Hope you have a good weekend.

  4. Such a lovely ornament bringing out each year will bring back some lovely memories. Netflix certainly sounds like fun.

  5. I'm pleased you have Netflix Wendy, I don't becasue I can't afford it but I have a kindle fire stick and Amazon prime but I hardly use it. I wear two hearing aids and only wear them when I go out, people don't understand about hearing loss they think that a hearing aid cures but like you say it doesn't and they are uncomfortable to wear. Naughty Cody haha he looks lovely and cosy on his new bed. :) xx

  6. That wool looks beautiful, I'm sure you must be going to make something wonderful with it. I watched The Crown on Netflix and thoroughly enjoyed it. Have fun.

  7. Hi Wendy! So sorry about your bro's doggie - but what sweet keepsake for him to always have fond memories. ;)

I love your scarves that you made them - so cute. And yay for Netflix! I have so many shows on there I'd like to watch but haven't gone there yet myself. Enjoy it!!

And that is a naughty poochie, but there isn't anything wrong with him, is there? I know sometimes pets act out like that when they have something physically wrong with them too. Might be worth a check up?

    Blessings on your weekend! xoxo

  8. I was wondering, too, whether Cody has something ailing him to make him suddenly start acting up like that. It might be worth having him checked out.
I enjoyed your five, lovely little keepsake ornament and lovely that the kiddies liked the scarves so much. Lucky you with your own television - I have a hearing aid as well and know how hard it is to watch regular tele with the family.

  9. A lovely post - it hurts to lose a dog that has been with you a long long time. I have a garbage raider also - some of the other other comments could be right as his behaviour is right out of character. Enjoy your weekend Wendy!

  10. Your ornament is a great memory keeper of Reba. (and resembles one that hung on my tree!)
My husband wears hearing aids and absolutely loves them. They have made such a difference in the way he interacts in groups. He watches television with me and has no difficulty at all. Yay for Netflix - Do watch The Crown - I think you'll love it.

  11. Your cute ornament is a sweet tribute to Reba. Nice to see that the boy didn't lose his scarf after all! Do you know what has triggered Cody's misbehavior? Netflix is an awesome gift! I'm contemplating signing up for a free trial just so that I can watch The Crown and the Gilmore Girls reboot!

  12. With all the advanced technology we enjoy today, I don't understand why they can't figure out a better hearing aid. Everyone I know who has one, has the same complaints. Maybe this is the year they'll find a better way. In the meantime, I shall be more grateful for my hearing. Thank you for reminding me.

  13. A lovely post of fives Wendy. The ornament is so artistic, and a beautiful gesture for your brother. I am also going deaf, and have been postponing the dreaded hearing aids because as you say and I know, it only amplifies things, and does not cure. Often I can't hear the TV, particularly watching movies, and I am very interested in hearing that Netflix has good subtitles. Maybe we will investigate that as I would love to see The Crown. The scarves are gorgeous and I'm sure the kids enjoy wearing them very much. Happy New Year Wendy.

  14. Enjoy Netflix, we don't have it as being in the country the internet reception is very, very slow. That is nice the kids are wearing your scarves that you made. Enjoy the upcoming week.

  15. Scarves and coats looking great together, Wendy! I love the felt ornament, you are so clever. Happy weekend. x

  16. My little dachshund lived to be 16 too and I was at a loss when he died. I still have the Christmas collar I put on him during holiday time and that was 23 years ago when he passed! I didn't realize it's been that long! Time sure flies. I keep it with the decorations. My MIL had a huge hearing loss and she did watch tv with closed caption. I never realized it was so hard for her. I have a friend who just went to an audiologist and got a different kind of hearing aid and she loves it. She puts it on different settings to block out some noises while increasing others. I could find out the type of aid she has if you want me to. Let me know. So nice to see scarves you made actually being worn! Happy New Year!

  17. Aw - so sorry about your brother's little dachshund! Such a sweet ornament that you made for him - he must have been so touched! I am sitting here right now with my daughter's two mini-dachshunds that I am pet-sitting for the weekend (along with my two Eskimo dogs). My Dad had hearing loss and it was hard for him to watch t.v., too. He would stick to movies he had seen over and over again. So glad that you found Netflix to help with that. Funny about your naughty dog, Cody getting into things when you leave. We have to keep all our bathroom doors shut and have lidded trash cans. Forget about leaving anything out on the counter overnight or when we are gone! Once we left an unopened, very large bag of dry dog food out of the bin and when we got home we had to wade through a sea of kibbles, with two very bloated dogs looking guilty from their beds:) xx Karen

  18. What a thoughtful gift for your brother - and it's lovely, too.

  19. The ornament, scarves, and whatever you make with your gorgeous yarn are/will be lovely...a loving expression of your artistry, Wendy. Those I know who use hearing aids have the same difficulties you are having, but it is good to know that Netflix subtitles may help to relieve some of your frustration. Now as for that puppy! We had various pets who performed those feats, too. You have my sympathy. xx

  20. Lovely to read your five things Wendy and pleased you can enjoy Netflix. Cody's exploits made me smile as I don't feel so bad about my naughty puppy now. I was changing bed sheets today and found a pillowcase chewed in two corners. Hector doesn't go upstairs in the bedrooms so I have no idea how it happened other than he must have got into the laundry room. He sleeps on the floor because he has eaten two beds!
