Five on Friday

Joining up with Amy of Love Made My Home and her Five on Friday!

One: A new addition to Algonquin Park, this magnificent totem pole carved by Algonquin Elder, Dan Bowers. It stands at the East Gate park office. We only noticed it this summer, but I don't see a date on the accompanying signs.

Two: Camp Arowhon is a summer camp for boys and girls on Teepee Lake in Algonquin Park. We paddled past it on one of our canoe day trips. We could hear the kids chanting in the woods ... sounded very cool. At a mere $8,000 for six weeks, you too can send your child to this oasis of summer fun. It's been in operation since the early 1930's. I was never sent to summer camps, but I sure would have loved to have been sent to this one!

Three: An old wooden boat sitting in the shade waiting to get back into the lake. There's something so nostalgic about weathered wooden boats. Our canoe is carbon fibre to make it lightweight for portages.  It weighs 35 pounds. However, the woodworker in my husband had to have a little bit of wood on it, so we got cherry trim.

Four: As we drive into Dorset on Hwy 35 we pass this interesting shed that someone has nailed their collection of metal tools all over the outside walls. I've always wanted to stop and take a photo, but usually forget. This summer as we whizzed by, I took a few quick shots. I wonder what this shed looks like on the inside.

Five: A couple of boat houses on Canoe Lake, along with an old log cabin (now a cottage) in the background.

Thanks for stopping by!

Wendy

  2. What beautiful photos! And I just read a book by Louise Penny, The Brutal Telling and it told some of the history of totem poles in a tribe in Canada. So interesting! Enjoy your weekend! Hugs!

  3. Great five, love wooden boats too. For $8000 you can travel first class to Europe, never mind camping out.

  13. The totem pole is of dignity. Each sculpture must have a deep and historic meaning.

  14. What a beautiful and intriguing Five, Wendy! Great photos and the big pine at the bottom of the post is wonderful.
Thank you for your comment yesterday. Miniature faking can be made with blurring the foreground and background of the image, as you wrote, but even after observing the photos carefully, I could swear that something magical has happened to the objects in the depth of field as well. :)
    Have a lovely new week!

  17. Oh my gosh! I can think of a lot more things I'd do with $8000.00 than stay in a cabin with a bunch of kids! But I suppose for some that isn't much....
The totem pole is magnificent, you're right. I love wooden boats! So nostalgic. I wish it could find it's way into the water.

  18. We have a totem pole carved about 20 years ago for our arboretum and were told they should never be painted with colour. I wonder if this is true because the elder who carved the pole for Algonquin used colours.
Who on earth has that kind of money to send kids to camp?

  20. I didn't know that about the totem pole. It's been awhile since I was last in the Park. I have probably seen that house on the way to Dorset- my parents lived in the area for several years.
