Tiny Knitted Baskets

I didn't think I'd be back posting again this week, but I wanted to share the little knitted baskets I've finished up.

I changed the inside cuff on the pink basket to be a bit shorter, but I still turned it to the inside.  I had knit a couple of rows of purl stitches to ease in the fold, so it wouldn't fold outside well with the purl bumps in place.  I thought it looked quite cute once I got the handle on it.

The blue basket has the cuff turned to the outside and I added a fancy picot edge to the cuff.  The handle is a 5-stitch I-cord.  I was going to get all fancy with the blue one and knit it in a basket weave pattern.  However, the pattern I have is for flat knitting, and do you think I could make it work for knitting in the round?!  I have no idea why it didn't work out (have I ever mentioned I do not have a mathematical mind?), but after several failed attempts and my anger starting to rise, I decided to um scrap it and just put a few rows of purl stitches in there for added interest instead.

The bottom was started the same way I make my coasters.  I have no idea what I'm going to use these tiny baskets for ... especially with Easter already behind us.  It was just something I had wanted to try to make.  I might just take a bit of yarn with me and knit on the four-hour drive to Leamington this weekend.  Gives me an excuse to ignore the boring scenery down that way ... flat, flat, flat ...

I think I'll write up a pattern for these and post it another time when I've played around with them a bit more.

The clouds are clearing up today, and whether it's the fact that bugs are waking up, or whether the birds were hungry after hiding out through two days of nasty weather, but I saw some new birds in the backyard this morning.  A little wren and a white-crowned sparrow, neither of which I was successful in capturing on camera.  However, I did get these shots and had a bit of fun editing them ...

Cardinal

Myrtle Warbler
Both images were taken through my kitchen window, and weren't all that clear.  A bit of editing on picmonkey made it all better ;)

Thanks again for stopping by!  And have I ever mentioned how much I enjoy and appreciate all your comments.  It's nice to see that people do stop by, but it's really, really special when some of you have a chance to say hello.  I always answer back via email, or else take a moment to visit back to your blogs.  I think it's so nice to have a little chat with you every so often, and hope you feel the same.  I hope you all have a good weekend my friends!

  6. Your little buckets are so very cute Wendy, and so is that adorable little bench that they are stood on! Could you fit in a tiny glass jar or votive holder and use them for a few odd flowers perhaps? They look pretty on their own though, especially sat on their bench. xx

  10. Such sweet baskets, Wendy. Good on you for your doggedness, it has resulted in two lovely baskets. How lovely that Spring is finally springing and the critters are coming out to play!!

  11. Those baskets certainly don't look tiny. They would make great baby gifts filled with necessary toiletries and such. And then the basket is a keeper for storage. Lovely! Nice shot of the birds -- certainly doesn't look like you took them through the window. Our windows are tinted and dirty from the dust so I can't get good photos through them at the moment. Have a fabulous Friday! Tammy

  13. Darling little baskets! We have a robin that nested in the trellis by the front door. She is getting bolder at scolding anyone who comes near. Today my husband managed to see that in fact there are robin's egg blue eggs in the nest.

  19. The baskets are so cute! I've never seen little knitted baskets before. I wonder how they would look in cotton? I've got an entire spool of cotton dishcloth yarn looking for a job. Have you ever tried making knitted bowls and felting them? That's something I've been thinking of trying.
That warbler is gorgeous! I've never seen one. The cardinals aren't here (or aren't making themselves known) yet, but I hope to see that flash of scarlet soon :)

  22. Nice baskets and just great for Easter. I can see these baskets easily crochet but it baffles me that you are able to knit them. Great job.

I have to agree with you about reading the comments. I love them and I know others do. I am making a point to leave a little note here and there where I stop to visit.

  25. Luv the baskets - there are so many seasonal themes you could knit baskets for - like gift baskets for Christmas. You have some lovely birds. I have the most crazy beautiful robin that likes to 'fly' up and down my bedroom window. I am not sure what it is trying to do but it's interesting.
