G'Morning Cheeps

Baby robin who has been hopping around the yard the last couple of days.  His parents have had a trying time this year.  A red-winged blackbird took over their first nest and I found the shattered tiny blue eggs on the ground.  But the determined robins built another nest by stealing bits and pieces from their original nest.  Then earlier this week I spied a huge black crow feasting on one of their young :(  This little guys sibling.  I was happy to see the parents taking such good care of this scrappy little piece of fluff, but they were getting upset that I was around, so I left them to their work after taking only a couple of shots.

Heading into the Victoria Day long weekend ... SOOOOO looking forward to this weekend, and I'm hoping for good gardening weather!

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Nature red in tooth and claw, hard to accept sometimes and yet, magical and wonderful as well. This little Robin is adorable and so well photographed. I miss the US Robins. Robins in the UK are very different, as are the Blackbirds. x

    1. I've always liked our robins as they're one of the first birds migrated back for summer ... and they have such a loud trilling song :)

  5. I really like your bird photos! It pulls at my heart strings to see my favorite little birds struggle but I am glad one of their young is doing well. Yesterday, I saw this bird at the park and I thought it was gorgeous but I had no idea what kind of bird it was. It let me get close enough to take some photos with my little snap shot camera and then I came home and it took me 45 minutes to find out it was just a common barn swallow. But it was a really pretty barn swallow! I think I have only seen swallows in flight and they are so fast that you don't really see all the details of the bird. Have a fun Victoria Day!

    1. Thanks Stacy ... it's never nice to witness the babies being gobbled, especially when the parents were just so frantic in the trees. I love little barn swallows ... so colourful! I'd love to see your photos of him! Enjoy your weekend :)

    1. Well, not much can be done ... even the crows have to survive. The baby robin is STILL in my backyard this evening ... moved into the lilac bush, and I hope he stays there tonight because it seems a lot safer than the scanty bush he was in earlier. Happy weekend ... did you get your night goggles and headlamp to do your night gardening yet?! Enjoy ;)

  8. Such a sweet little baby robin. Great photos, Wendy :)
Hope the weather warms up for you. Happy weekend and happy gardening!

Today it seemed like summer arrived here, it's been 25 degrees C, so warm and lovely. It's forecast to be a warm and sunny weekend, and I plan to do some gardening too :)

  9. Oh my gosh, I love fluffy baby robins! We found a crushed egg on the sidewalk this week too. I hate that. So sad.

Enjoy the weekend. I'm absolutely positive it's going to provide good gardening weather!! We deserve it. :)

    1. I guess robins take a beating during nesting, but it never seems to deplete their numbers. The sun is up and just a few wispy clouds up there ... looks good from here! Enjoy your weekend :D

What a treat to have them nesting nearby where you can watch them grow.

    1. He needs to grow quite a bit in the tail feathers too! He can barely fly (just enough to pop up into the lower branches), and it's a wonder he's already out of the nest.

  11. Love your Robin pictires Wendy. I always find it amazing that the fluffed up baby birds look bigger than their parents! We had some up close and personal Robins a few years ago. One flew the nest (in the drainpipe hopper) hesitantly and then hopped along with his dad to the undergrowth. We love the Robins that return each year.
