Stash Buster Challenge

Linking up with the Stash Buster Challenge of 2013 with Linda & Ana.  My challenge was this basket of cotton yarn.  I've made up four dishcloths following the 'Grandma's Fan Dishcloth' pattern in this book ...

The dishcloth pattern by Judy Becker was inspired by antique lace medallions, so it's ... you know ... purdy :)  ... especially for a dishcloth.

And they're hard wearing and soft for your even your best china!  I love the earth-tone shades of this yarn.

I used some inexpensive cotton by Bernat purchased at my local craft store (about $2 a small skein), and it took just a little over one skein to do each dishcloth using size 3.25 mm needles.  These are knit in the round.  These dishcloths are huge (probably because I didn't use the recommended mercerized cotton) ... they're so big you could use them for place settings ...

(oh yes, do you like my last night's thrifty purchase?)

All in all I was happy with my stash buster achievement.  I'm not a speedy knitter, and these took up a lot of my spare moments.

This is what remained of my original basket full of yarn.  Not sure what to do with this now ... I might make one more dishcloth, but I don't think I have quite enough of that green or red to complete it.

I'll post my March challenge once I have a quick moment to have a look in my stash ...

Thanks for stopping by for yet another photo heavy post!!

Wendy

    1. Thanks Gilly! Isn't Humpty cute? I can't believe he was just sitting on the store's shelf at 8:30 at night! And the store was hoppin'!

  2. Great stash busters! They turned out great and I love the colors! Looks like you have enough left over for some little scrubbies or something. I love cotton yarn! Happy stash busting!

    1. Thank you! I was thinking maybe some knitted coasters as they don't take much yarn. Oh yes! I saw a piece of your pottery on Curlerchik's blog ... SO nice :) Wendy

    1. Thank you Daisy ... you're so talented with the crochet! I kind of wish I could crochet, but haven't felt too ambitious lately to try something new (again! I only feel I've sorted out knitting!). Have a great week :)

  4. Very pretty! I love that you made circular dishcloths, as I've just started working on some shapes other than squares myself. I'm sure you can think of something for that leftover yarn!

    1. Thanks Ashley! It took me a while to get the hang of circular knitting, and at first I would avoid ALL of it. But it really does open up a whole new world of projects to try.

    1. Thanks Gaia, I'm not sure which I like better, knitting/sewing or photographing the projects at the end! The photography is like the icing on the cake ;)

    1. Yes, I'm sure that is a word Maria! Poor Humpty Dumpty got packed into a drawer today :( I keep holding onto these things for when I (one day) have a sewing 'room' again and I'll be able to display these pieces that don't really fit anywhere else in my house. The only downside to acquiring my sewing room is that one of my children have to permanently leave home first.

    1. Thanks Hilde ... it really is such a nice pattern, and I did pretty good at following it until the last dishcloth (darker green), and I got messed up in all that lace work. I guess I'd had enough of it by then!

  10. Wonderful, Wendy!!! They are so beautiful that I would hate to use them as dishcloths... maybe placemats sound better. (I am sorry I did not see them before I made the monthly report. They are worth mentioning!) Congratulations

    1. Thanks Ana, I've made a few of these before and it just adds that special element to doing the dishes to use a pretty dishcloth :) No worries about the report, I was a bit tardy finishing them up.

    1. Well, thank you Stacy :) They did look rather nice on the table during my photo shoot. Maybe one meal with them under our plates and then everyone can wash their own dishes with their placemat!

  13. Wendy!!! These are gorgeous! I don't think I could use it as a dish cloth because they are just to pretty and cool! How outstanding!!! I so wish I could whip something like that up!!!

    1. Thanks so much! You have no idea what a little thrill it gives me to hear people say "I wish I could do that" because I've struggled with the knitting for so long and wished I could "do that" so many times!! I've still got a long way to go in figuring out some patterns (confusing to me), but I'm slowly making progress.

  15. The dishcloths are so pretty Wendy - beautiful colours and they look so intricate....as a very 'simple' knitter I really admire your skill!
I love the idea that you use them and they make dishwashing more pleasurable - I need every incentive I can get!

    1. Thank you Ali, and don't let the 'intricate' part fool you ... these are very easy to make, you just need full concentration on the lace bits (I'm really not a very experienced knitter yet), but thank you for your kind compliments :)
