Tea Time Cheers!

In anticipation of the upcoming Tea Party Tuesday (see link in my sidebar), I thought I'd share some tea time photos with you.

Above are my dear old Granddad and Grandmama enjoying the ever present cup of tea ...even in the bush!  They were Yorkshire folks (Sheffield), my dad's parents.  My granddad was such a riot, and would tease us endlessly when they came to visit us here in Ontario.  Just look at that devious smirk on his face :)  I love that here they are camping (we weren't even using an established campground, just parked the trailer at the bottom of a place called Palmer Rapids), and Grandmama is in her pretty dress and high heels!  We would only go to Palmer Rapids in the fall, so Granddad has rightly worn socks with his sandals.

And now here is my lovely mother, Violet, with her small pot of tea (water boiled over the fire in that little blackened pot).  This was also at Palmer Rapids (a favourite spot for my parents), but this would've been years after we camped here as a family.  I love that Mom is sitting barefoot on the rock, with two tea mugs, and she's obviously waiting for my dad to take the picture and "come and have your tea Joe".  I see she also brought her book along to read beside the river.

And another shot of Grandmama, Granddad and Mom.  Another camping trip?  Probably not, since Mom would not have worn a dress to camp, but definitely somewhere in northern Ontario, and they've stopped along the way to boil the water for tea.  It's what my parents did ... stop the car at some picnic rest, get the Coleman stove going and make the tea.  No restaurants ... ever.  The classy tea mugs they are all using in these photos are "Melmac" cups.  Classic camping ware as they are INdestructable!!  I have them now and we pack them up in our own trailer for our camping trips.  The nostalgia wrapped up in these mugs is intense.  So many remembered times of having a cup of very sweet, hot tea around the campfire with my family.

Cheers everyone!

Oh!  Here's a young bull moose trotting past our campsite last summer ...

...  won't you stop for a spot of tea?

... no?  well then, have a lovely day sweet moose :)

Wendy :)

  1. Next time I go camping I'm going to definitely pack my high heels and a dress, who needs sensible sandals (or wellies if you camp in the UK) and cropped trousers?! :) x

    1. I might be able to do the dress, but not the heels ... and did I mention grandmother's form-fitting girdle? and nylon stockings?! Our camping adventures are just a bit too rough to allow for such refined pleasures :) Wendy

  3. I know Palmer Rapids! How delightful that you have such fond memories of the place. Your parents and grandparents truly knew/know how to take a cup of tea. To stop and steep their own along their travels is just so wonderful. So in the moment. What a tremendous way to connect with the places are you travelling through.

Awesome moose photos! I miss the green of summer.

    1. I'm so glad you know of that special place. Don't know if it's the same as when we were there as kids, but we camped at the bottom of the rapids with a few other hippy types under the pine trees. The roar of the rapids was constant all day and night, and we made 'houses' in the pine needles by scooping them into walls for rooms. It's the pine needles that we all remember so well ... they were so THICK! We always travelled with picnic cooler & Coleman stove in the trunk of the car. No a/c in the cars in those days, so we were ALL glad to get out for a break after a long drive. Wendy

    1. I can't imagine wearing all that fancy stuff at the beach or camping. I LOVED to get all pretty when we went visiting :) and still remember a few special dresses Mom made for me (aqua blue velvet was one). The moose was taken in Algonquin Park which is such a beautiful northern, rocky, tree-filled place ... it was very early in the morning with no one else around ... a very special moment :) Wendy
